A half-remembered cover of “Sunshine” for Incongruous Quarterly

The Incongruous Quarterly published their 2nd issue over the holidays and included a music mix, which included our version of “Sunshine”.

“This was recorded in a similar fashion to the original record…rather spontaneously. I awoke in the town I was living in at the time (Grindrod, BC) and decided that I would try to learn this classic folk song without listening to it at all. (reason for only one verse…it was all I knew.) I quickly recorded it…I think while my wife was in the shower. And then forgot about it.

Skip three months ahead…Erik Arnesen arrives in Grindrod to finish recordings for our next record at the local community hall. He contributed banjo and ebo guitar. This changes the song substantially. Ultimately it is both an embrace and rejection of folk music.”

Europe Tour – Nov/Dec 2010

Just about all the dates for our first European tour are confirmed.

See them HERE.

We’ll be traveling as a four-piece band:

Colin Huebert – Guitar, Vocals, Piano, Drums, etc.
Erik Arnesen – Banjo, Guitar, Vocals, etc.
Shaunn Watt – Drums, Vocals, Guitar, etc.
Peter Carruthers – Bass, Vocals, Guitar, Piano, etc.

Our first-ever live show with this line-up went real nicely in Vancouver last week and we’re also looking forward to a couple more warm-up shows in Ontario and Quebec before crossing the ocean.

Album launch show in Vancouver, October 6th at The Media Club

We are launching our record with a Vancouver show.  Looks like we’ll also be playing a few dates in Ontario and Quebec at the very end of October/early November before leaving for a European tour which is definitely on (hurrah) – should have a first round of confirmed dates to announce on both these fronts very soon.

Also Red Ryder is officially booking us for North America, with the inimitable and intrepid Matt Spinner on the case – check the CONTACTS page for his info.  Gearing up for USA live action in the new year…

A couple of nice reviews

A thoughtful review of the debut album from one of the web’s more thoughtful music review sites, Tiny Mix Tapes

…[E]motional immediacy and [a] palpable earnestness are the record’s hearthstones. Lyrically, Siskiyou is a dark, desperate document that, though it has a certain tenderness and warmth about it, deals largely with mortality, doubt, vehemence, and resignation. While its musical means are fairly traditional — guitar, banjo, piano, voices, and assorted percussion — they’re played with economy and conviction, and Huebert’s strained vocal delivery imbues each track with a bittersweet magic uniquely his own.
Siskiyou also succeeds on the strength of its production. Recorded entirely by Huebert and Arnesen at a number of different locations, without the benefit of a proper studio, every sound on the record is captured with astounding crispness. The mixes are impeccably clear and spacious, and the duo gets an incredible amount of dynamic mileage out of smart, subtle choices.

And from Exclaim!, our Canadian indie-music monthly of record…

They’ve forged a record that is as demure and fierce as the Sasquatch they’ve chosen for the CD’s cover art. You can almost imagine them, basket in hand, trekking through the very forests of Northern California ― across the Siskiyou mountain range they’ve named themselves after ― to gather naturally created, harmonious timbers, with all their richness and chaos intact. Huebert and Arensen recorded these in vivo nuggets while living in British Columbia and deftly arranged them to complement their affecting lyrics and simple guitar strums. With gentle, just shy of dramatic, abandon, the Sasquatch, er, Siskiyou reign supreme over the album’s organic density of sound.
